Jharkhand student unrest as job aspirants stage Tiranga Yatra

Unrest broke out across Jharkhand after thousands of students and job seekers turned out for the Tiranga Yatra on Independence Day over recruitment examination irregularities. The pro-union rally took place as the row over recruitment examination in Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) continued to furocious. The student protesters staged massive protests in the capital city as they unfurled the national flag during the rally from Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium to Albert Ekka Chowk. The student protesters said that the Tiranga Yatra will give the needed strength to their protest against JPSC-JSSC recruitment examination malpractices as the issue continues to furocious.

Student protests are rocking Jharkhand after the students accused the authorities of conducting the examination with malpractices and flaws in the system. The student protesters are demanding a transparent selection process and an independent probe into the JSSC recruitment examination irregularities.

The student protesters are demanding that the JSSC Combined Graduate Level (JSSC-CGL) Examination 2024 be canceled, with a CBI investigation into the JPSC-JSSC recruitment row. The students argued that the state’s recruitment examination was a matter affecting thousands of aspiring government job candidates and demanded the state to take necessary measures to ensure transparency in the recruitment examination process for government jobs

The August 10 clashes raised the stakes in the Jharkhand student protests after massive crowds of protesters tried to enter the Jharkhand Assembly building on August 10. Tight security was put in place around the secretariat as the police cleared the secretariat of thousands of frustrated protesters who stormed the gates in an attempt to gain entry. Tear gas, water cannons, and baton charges were used to clear the building of protesters.

Meanwhile, the student protesters criticized the administration for registering an FIR against the students following the clashes.

Jharkhand students give ultimatum to government

The protesters warned the administration to fulfill their demands or else they will gherao the chief minister’s house by August 18. The students’ demands include taking strong action against those found guilty in the JPSC-JSSC recruitment row, canceling the examinations, and launching a CBI investigation into the alleged irregularities.

While the Jharkhand government tries to negotiate with the student protesters to address their grievances, the administration invites the students for another round of talks on August 17 after the first meeting failed to deliver any consensus. The talks between the administration and the student protesters are ongoing as the government has reportedly agreed to some of the students’ demands.

Jharkhand student protesters launch hunger strike

Devendra Nath Mahto, one of the student leaders, initiates a hunger strike as talks with the administration continue. The protesters are dissatisfied with the slow progress on their demands, especially concerning the recruitment row. According to reports, Mahto was on his 15th day of hunger strike on August 17.

What will happen now?

The Jharkhand student protests against recruitment examination irregularities are set to intensify after the talks between the administration and student protesters on August 17. The meeting will decide whether an agreement will be reached between the two parties or not. If not, then students will embark on a massive protest with a march toward the Chief Minister’s residence.

The state government’s response to the student unrest has been heavily criticized by the opposition. The protesters’ demands have caught the attention of several political figures. The Jharkhand Legislative Assembly was under protest as students criticized the government for its response to the JPSC-JSSC recruitment row. The student protesters accused the administration of misusing the state’s resources and said that it was an effort to weaken the opposition.
