RBI Forex Swap Inflows Register $73 Billion

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) opened its special USD-INR forex swap facility on June 8, 2026. The RBI forex swap inflows reached $72.85 billion by August 21.

This is indeed the positive response from the foreign exchange market to RBI special forex swap facility aimed at boosting foreign exchange resources.

The RBI has opened the forex swap facility to ease liquidity in the foreign exchange market and better manage external financial liabilities.

FCNR(B) Deposits Account For RBI Forex Swap Inflows

The foreign currency non-resident bank (FCNR(B)) deposits make up the majority of the RBI forex swap inflows. The Indian banks harnessed around $65.40 billion foreign exchange through the FCNR(B) deposits as of August 21.

The Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) have shown an overwhelming response to the RBI forex swap facility. The deposits by the NRIs have enabled the Indian banks to mobilize large-scale forex resources.

Other Sources of RBI Forex Swap Inflows

The overseas foreign currency borrowings contribute to about $4.9 billion to the RBI forex swap inflows. The external commercial borrowings (ECBs) add nearly $2.6 billion to the forex inflows.

The RBI forex swap facility utilizes other foreign exchange sources such as overseas borrowings to meet the target of raising $73 billion.

RBI Forex Swap Facility Helps Build Forex Reserves

The RBI can use the foreign exchange inflows from the special forex swap facility to build up India’s forex reserves. India’s foreign exchange reserves stood at $716.9 billion as of August 14, 2026.

The huge forex reserves would help hedge against any foreign exchange risks and also ease the outflow pressures on the weak Rupee.

Impact of RBI Forex Swap On Indian Rupee

The RBI forex swap facility has enabled the central bank to increase the dollar supply in the country. However, the Indian Rupee (INR) has not witnessed any major strength against the American Dollar (USD).

The traders speculate that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been purchasing dollars to build up its foreign exchange reserves.

The RBI forex swap facility helps the central bank to stabilize the currency by intervening in the foreign exchange market.

Significance of RBI Forex Swap Inflows

The RBI forex swap facility offers several benefits to the Indian banks and economy. The facility helps the banks to access more foreign exchange resources.

It also stimulates the appetite for overseas deposits and borrowings among the banks. The large-scale forex inflows through the RBI forex swap facility can help build the country’s reserves.

Moreover, the special forex swap facility provides flexibility to the RBI in responding to the changing foreign exchange market needs.

RBI Forex Swap Attracts Confidence From Overseas Depositors

The positive response to the RBI forex swap facility indicates the confidence of overseas depositors in the Indian banking system. The deposits by the Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) have crossed the levels recorded in the 2013 FCNR(B) swap facility program.

The RBI forex swap program has attracted around $73 billion within eleven weeks of its launch. On the other hand, the 2013 FCNR(B) swap facility fetched only $26 billion deposits from the overseas investors within three months of its inception.

    RBI Forex Swap Window Closure

The RBI has kept the closure date of the FCNR(B) swap facility on August 31, 2026.
The RBI decided to extend the closure date after witnessing a phenomenal response to the special forex swap facility. The ECB and OFCB windows will remain open till December 31, 2026.

    Conclusion

The RBI forex swap facility has received overwhelming responses from the global depositors. The special forex swap window has registered nearly $73 billion for the Indian economy within eleven weeks of its opening.

The FCNR(B) deposits comprise the majority of the RBI forex swap inflows. The positive response to the RBI forex swap facility can benefit the country by increasing the foreign exchange resources.

The enhanced forex reserves through the special forex swap facility will enable India to withstand the foreign exchange fluctuations in the global markets.
